Fish Pedicure at Bodhi Thai Spa (Infinity Mall, Mumbai)
If you find conventional pedicures and foot scrubs passé to say the least, consider dunking your footsies in a tank full of fish and let them handle the rest. Coming straight from the hot springs of the Middle East, Garra Rufa or Doctor Fish as they are fondly called, are known to chomp away dead and scaly skin leaving your feet soft and supple.
The Garra Rufa species became hot spa property after their therapeutic pedicuring skills were discovered in the Turkish hot springs called Kanga. This simple yet unusual piscine therapy can benefit you in more ways than one:
The tiny fish feed off all the dead cells on your body revealing fresh, healthy and glowing skin from underneath.
Ichthyotherapy (the fancy term for fish therapy) is known to alleviate signs and symptoms of stubborn skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
The gentle nibbling leaves you ticklish and giggly – a perfect way to drain away stress and fatigue.
Hundreds of one-inch long swimmers peck at different parts of your body to give you a micro-massage and boost your blood flow.
Continued therapy can even lighten scars and blemishes.
Needless to say, the idea of having a school of tiny fish feeding off your body is not for skeptics and the fainthearted. But having been there and done that, I have only nice things to say about the whole experience. My feet really did come out looking clean and exfoliated, although the effects were nowhere close to a professional pedicure. But that was not really the point of this whole exercise. i would have loved it more if they had topped it up with a brief foot massage. The Husband and I took a session together, which was fun, especially since the offspring was out gallivanting with grand parents. It can be also be quite romantic, yes.
We were made to rinse our feet before plunging them into the tank and the moment we did, thousands of tiny hungry fishies pounced upon us, nibbling at our feet. It is ticklish as hell but very amusing too.
A typical session of fish spa can last anywhere between 10-30 minutes. How’s that for a quick lunch hour getaway?
The fish are kept in hygienic, temperature controlled tanks and there are separate tanks for people with infectious skin conditions. Always get your session done at a reputable spa and under trained experts. Now that the trend is catching on, many small-time establishments offer similar packages at throwaway prices. Since most don’t have ideal quality and hygiene control standards, you are much better off paying an extra buck and saving your skin from infections.
If you have still have concerns, I can tell you that the fish are known to be gentle and toothless!
It’s relaxing, it’s scientific and it’s very very exotic – perfect for those who like to woo beauty in style. And no, it’s not very expensive either. A session of fish spa can cost you anywhere between Rs.450 – Rs. 800 – not a bad deal at all considering it’s high pampering quotient and beauty benefits!
